Visitor Hendrik Enslin shows one of two Largemouth Yellowfish caught at Otters' Haunt one day during July 2006. Both Largemouth and Smallmouth are to be found in the great variety of fishing waters among the islands. In close proximity are many deep currents, big pools, strong whitewater cascades, smaller rapids that can be waded, low weirs and shallow rills. There are no motorboats, campers or passing traffic amid the wilderness of islands. Come and explore this magical environment!

About flyfishing at Otters' Haunt

yellowfish heaven, By Brian Joubert

The Vaal – Orange River system is home to some of the best freshwater flyfishing in South Africa. Two Species of indigenous yellow fish, namely the Vaal-Orange Smallmouth (Barbus aneaus) and Vaal-Orange Largemouth (B. kimberlyensis) are to be found in the Vaal near Parys.

The smallmouth is more abundant and more commonly targeted by flyanglers than the unfortunately very rare and threatened largemouth. Mudfish, Catfish and the occasional Carp are also taken by flyanglers on the Vaal.

For rates and rules on fly fishing - that is, river access via Otters' Haunt, and guided flyfishing, with the option to raft downriver with your guide - go here. A limited number of day-parking places is available for bona fide flyanglers. Let us help you get into fly fishing, take you to the secret places only we know, and guide you in the art and ethics of the sport. Guided raft trips for flyanglers are available with qualified and knowledgeable guides.

The smallmouth yellowfish has proven to be one of the best freshwater species for flyanglers on the subcontinent. These hard fighting ‘freshwater bonefish’ are common in a wide variety of habitats from ankle deep, fast riffles to deeper, sluggish pools. Yellows are commonly caught on weighted nymphs as well as dries. This variation makes for interesting fishing and keeps anglers on their toes. Many first timers become total addicts and converts to hunting yellows. Experience your first 4 lb. yellow taking you into your backing in a rapid and you too will be convinced! High-sticking, short accurate casting and long drifts with dries are all commonly employed tactics and make for varied and exciting flyfishing.
