About us

GRAEME ADDISON

OTTERS’ HAUNT

Owner, writer, guide

The “rafting professor”, Graeme is the man who started professional river rafting in South Africa, but is also is a well known author of books, a working journalist, and a former Professor of Communication. At the Vaal Cybercentre he runs Editorial Assignments, a publishing house specialising in websites and books on popular science and technology. His passion is astronomy and the story of asteroids. Meanwhile he keeps his adventure edge, being a keen mountain biker, kayaker and, of course, raftmaster. Graeme trains outdoor guides under Adventure Standards Africa. We bought this property in the year 2000 after it had been extensively damaged by the huge flood of 1996. The garden was a marshland and the guest house was collapsing and smelly. We named it Otters’ Den after the animals that swim in the river. We renovated, tidied up, and made the property as floodproof as possible – for example, tiling all the floors. The flood of 2011 did virtually no harm. We put everything on bricks.

The property next door was offered to us by the farmer who had retired and we grabbed the offer. Here isn 2003-4 we built the Full Moon bush camp. It gets its name from the spectacular moon rises that are seen from the porch of the Cormorant cabin (cormorant because it perches on a rock!).

The place is a paradise with the river in the front garden and veld and mountains as a back yard. Who could ask for more? We’ve tried to keep the atmosphere peaceful and rustic, so that others can come and enjoy a bit of the good life.

KAREN ADDISON

Manager, teacher, adventure racer

A former teacher of the deaf and primary school teacher, Karen supervises all facilities and handles all bookings. Once a top SA woman paddler, she remains active as an adventure runner, knocking off challenges like the 260km, five-day run from Hermanus to Paarl over the mountains. Karen is a kayaker and mountain biker. She loves kids and will be happy to show you around the trails and islands in the river. Karen has turned Otters’ Haunt from a run-down holiday cottage into a successful guest house and bush camp business.
