Orange River

The Orange or !Gariep River is one of the world’s top ten tripping rivers. It has everything: dramatic scenery, small and large rapids, remoteness, wildlife and a fascinating history. This ancient river course with its many moods offers a wonderful environment for self-discovery,  for cementing family relationships and building team spirit.

Catered and self-catered trips are available, although we do not mix these on one trip. Read these links for detailed info and then fill in the Inquiry Form about your own interest – who, what, when. WHAT TO EXPECT. ABOUT THE ROUTE. OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL. Watch the ORANGE RIVER VIDEO.

We are the pioneers

Every year between May and September for more than four decades,  The Riverman has organised 5-7-day expeditions to the Orange River Gorge (pictured) on the border between Bushmanland and the Kalahari desert. We pioneered this route in the 1970’s and 80s (along with many other rivers, when we launched rafting in SA). For the Orange, we chose midyear because it’s the cool, green season with normal daytime temperatures around 20-25 deg C, rather than going in the brutally hot summer when it can be up to 45 deg C.

The Riverman opened up this route for rafting in the 1970s and has explored it at every level and in every season, coming to know its changes and dangers intimately. Although we cover only about 65km in five days, allowing for a day off during which we hike, explore and relax. Every moment is taken up with activities and sight-seeing so as not waste this precious time in one of nature’s wonderlands.
