Friendly Rules for Otters' Haunt

& Full Moon Bush Cabins

Plus policies on Parties, Pets, Firewood, Boating and Picnics

Home

This is not a resort but a guest lodge with a family atmosphere. When you visit us you are entering the territory of the otter, the fish eagle, and the rippling river. We are part of a conservancy in the World Heritage Site of the Vredefort Dome. We keep human numbers down and we try to limit environmental impact. For the sake of all visitors we observe certain standards of behaviour, safety and respect for nature.

NO SMOKING IS ALLOWED INSIDE ANY BUILDING.

GROUPS

  • No raucous parties and no karoake, sound systems, ghetto blasters - music is NOT allowed as this is a peaceful natural area.
  • Please do not play music from car sound systems.
  • Discuss all party plans with us beforehand. Arrangements may need to be made for parking, firewood, extra catering and toilet facilities. A breakage deposit is required.

PEOPLE

  • If you are planning to have extra day visitors, inform us. See rates. No overnighting without prior arrangement.
  • There is a limit on visitor numbers. Ask at Reception.

PETS AND OTHER ANIMALS

  • If you wish to bring a dog, please discuss with Karen. Regrettably, we refuse entry to certain kinds of dogs due to incidents in the past. And we require you to accept responsibility and liability. Dogs must be on a leash in guest areas. Poop must be removed from lawns and common areas.
  • We can't be asked to look after your dogs in your absence, and it is up to you to safeguard them.
  • Please do not feed or encourage the monkeys!
  • When walking, carry a stick and look out for snakes - they will avoid you.

FIRES & FIREWOOD

  • Do not burn huge bonfires - wood is increasingly scarce. See rates for price of crates of wood. Make arrangements for bonfire stacks for special occasions.
  • Fire is a major hazard all year round - please be careful and put out embers at night (buckets provided)
  • No fires on the islands! Bring your own gas cooker.
  • NO SMOKING inside the River House or Bush cabins

SECURITY AND KEYS

  • For your security, lock cars, cabins, rooms.
  • The entry gates are locked at night - you will be given a key.
  • Lost keys are charged double for replacement.

BREAKAGES

  • For all parties, birthdays and celebrations, a breakage deposit of R2000+ (depending on size of group) is payable on arrival, to cover glasses, crockery, fittings, furniture, linen, and all other assets.
  • We count on you to report breakages and losses. Thank you.

QUAD BIKING

  • Sorry, no quad biking is allowed on our property. We intend to keep the venue quiet and safe for all.
  • But there are great quad biking tracks in the vicinity, outside the Dome World Heritage Site (not permitted there at all).

 TRIPS

  • All activities are at at your own risk. Lifejackets must be worn. Please control children!
  • Two-seater, stable and safe sit-on-top canoes are for hire. See rates.
  • We love to show our guests around the islands in the river, on various canoe trails. Come to reception to arrange.
  • We do not run whitewater rafting trips but can arrange these for you

PICNICS

  • There are two picnic sites - one below the bushcamp and one at the deck. No fires! You must make prior arrangement for picnics on the island or elsewhere.
  • Braai away from accommodation, only on arrangement - no casual braais.

COME TO RECEPTION WITH ALL YOUR QUERIES AND REQUESTS

Be careful on the river and on walks! This is a wild environment and you may encounter snakes, slippery rocks, fallen trees. We have a small first aid kit and there is always a doctor on call in Parys.
